Completed Southern Club Events 2013

Mainland Mustang Challenge Weekend 14th - 16th June 2013
Lake Ohau

Friday we left Invercargill to head to Lake Ohau being one hour behind schedule due to someone forgetting the oysters. First stop was lunch at The Old Post in Clyde which is the best place for coffee!!! We then meet up with the Christchurch Mustang Club at the turnoff to the lake. Followed by a greet and meet with a paper bag auction and nibbles held at The Lodge. It was great to see everyone sticking to theme of hat and tie. Shame about the cantabrian who's wallet is a bit lighter after a run in with the law. Not by the hat checking sheriffs either.
Saturday after a nice breakfast met up with the other members who arrived that morning. We left at 10am travelling to Lake Benmore then around to Kurow for lunch at The Kurow Hotel. As being a Challenge weekend quiz's and games were played at lunch with the Southern Club being in great form. Cruised on from there at there own pace meeting up again in Omarama. Some stopping for a shop or a drink others heading back to the lodge for maybe a nana nap??? That evening we met up again at 6pm making sure hats were still on but with different ones from the previous evening. Had the main auction and prize giving. The Southern club taking out the Challenge Trophy. Was a great evening overall with the All Blacks winning and I'm sure the bar owner will be happy with his takings.
Sunday morning another great breakfast we said our farewells. Road conditions were initially good till they became white and slippery as we met the main road making the Southern Club go the long way home via Oamaru. And the Canterbury Club braving there way threw the snow until Burkes Pass. With us following the Canterbury Club meeting up in Fairlie for Coffee as were on way to Ashburton for night but ended up being two due to floods. Great weekend had by Garry and Leonie.

Oturehua trip.
May Madness

Saturday the 11th of May saw 10 Mustang car lovers (and of course wives and partners), leave bright and early from Invercargill and travel up to Central Otago. Our first stop was of course for petrol and then onto the Chatto Creek Tavern for a pit stop, light refreshments and lunch. We visited the E Hayes workshop and homestead at Oturehua for a grand tour around. This place is just amazing, very interesting and of course linked with us here in Invercargill with the descendants now operating E Hayes & Sons in Dee Street. We met up with another two cars from Wanaka way so a great turnout for our May Madness run.

We checked into our accommodation which was just beautiful. Not only did we have the most breathtaking views of the Hawkdun range covered in snow, but a lovely lodge in which to unwind and relax. I would highly recommend the Inverlair Lodge, at Oturehua, made very popular now of course with the Central Otago Rail Trail. There are a lot of interesting old buildings to fossick around in, the Oturehua Old Store (Gilchrists) being one of them.

We met up at the Oturehua Railway Hotel, again an old relic, built in the late 1800s and today a very popular spot with the Rail Trail and of course not forgetting the annual Brass Monkey motorcycle run. The owners Grahame and Liz put on a great night for us with a wonderful meal, wine tasting with John Matheson from Drumsara Wines in Alexandra and entertainment courtesy of the local patrons! A few sore heads the next day, must have been a good night.

Sunday we headed for home with a drive through the gorgeous wee settlement of Ophir and the must do, a cruise over the Ophir bridge. Lunch at Clyde at the Post Office finished off what was a great weekend away. Thanks to Mark & Andrea Churchill for organising this all for us.

Great cars, great food, great wine and great company, what more would you want??
